Mission AAR

Yorkshire Rose lost on Mission 12; Sherwood Shirly lost on Mission 19

1943

Mission 1 - Cake walk… only slight damage to right rudder from medium flak over target… no fighter contact.
Mission 2 - Incident free outbound flight.. heavy flak over target. Me 110 destroyed prior to bombing run by tail gunner. Number 2 engine feathered by flak on the turn around and shortly thereafter another Me 110 attacked with four passes in total… pilot and TG KIA and engineer severely wounded ( likely to lose an arm)… Navigator took over control and despite damage to the aircraft, including a missing tail wheel and most of the rear turret, was able to put down without incurring further damage at the airfield
Mission 4 - Recalled in zone 2 due to bad weather (rolled a 6 on 2d10 = recalled, followed by 3 on d6 = weather rather than a spoof raid)
Mission 5 - ‘Rendezvous with multiple Squadron line in good weather over the Norfolk coast. ‘Maid Marian’ behind us reporting electrical systems failure on comms and resorting to manual operation of gun turrets mid and tail. immediate detection of enemy aircraft above us in North Sea transit, but no direct contact. Picked up some flak over the Belgian coast but nothing too close for comfort… soon enough picked up bandits and night fighter seen to engage with ‘Maid Marian’ to our immediate rear.. damage reported and checks revealed inoperable port landing gear, some fouling of ammo boxes but nothing to deter continuance of the mission. Jerry tried it on again and the tail turret gunner had a good eye, sending the Ju-88 G-7 away into the night not to be seen again. Increased flak on approach to target, several aircraft taking some damage but continuing on final run… sky now heavy with night fighters, a Dornier causing much consternation behind us… then a catastrophic explosion when ‘Maid Marian’ took fire to the bomb bay, rocking us in the pressure wave… nothing left of the aircraft to our immediate rear, debris falling as indiscernable chaff, nothing that could be identified as part of an airframe. All crew lost, no chance of survival’

1942

Mission 20 - A quiet one for a green newly assembled crew. No contact over water outbound or homeward. Medium Flak over the target area, no damage to the aircraft. Two enemy night fighters ( Me 110 and Dornier 217 J-1) one pass from the 110 with no damage then lost contact. Do.217 caused damage to engine No. 1, fuel sealed and engine feathered. Flight home totally uneventful.
