Mission AAR
Woof, Woof, Woof lost during Mission 5, 1943.
1943
Mission 6 - The Mystery Machine is living up to its name! As we moved above 10,000 ft, everyone’s Oxygen was not working. The thought of hugging the deck crossed our minds all the way to the big B, but the heavy cloud we were warned about changed our minds. Sadly we turned around and made a safe landing back at base. Bit browned off but I’m sure we will go back to teach old Adolf a lesson!
Mission 7 - We were quite lucky, we dodged the fighters on the way to the target and their Flak must have been napping! We’d dropped the bombs on Bremen before they’d fired a shot at us. We later found a few holes in the old kite after we landed and our photo showed we were on target even with all the cloud! No dramas getting home and a safe landing.
Mission 8 - The Mystery Machine sure lived up to its name, half way over France no.2 engine erupted in flames. Scooby was quick to extinguish the flames but we knew we wouldn’t get over the Alps with our eggs. We also had to drop altitude. Scooby took her down to the weeds to avoid some detection. We also couldn’t jettison our bombs over the French mainland in the dark.It was a slow trip back to the coast where we dodged the flack and fighters. We dropped our bombs and got a perfect hit on the English Channel. We landed back home for tea and stickies! We’ll paint an ice cream cone on the old Mystery Machine next time!
Mission 9 - The Mystery Machine lived up to its name with an O2 failure over the North Sea, Scooby descended below 10,000ft and took her down above the waves. Knowing the importance in knocking out the target Scooby cracked on and would deal with being at low altitude with bombs falling around us later. In zone 11 the Mystery Machine lost all hydraulics to the bomb bay doors. Scooby tried opening them but to no avail! With the bombs stuck Scooby turned the kite around and headed for home, once again on the deck. We had a run in with a couple of fighters Shaggy shooting down an Me110G4 and Velma and Shaggy knocking a Do217N2 out of the sky! We did sustain damage to our fuel tanks, Aileron and ammo racks. Scooby limped the bomber to within range of our rescue launches. Fred radioed our position for a Mayday Ditching. Scrappy Doo our engineer tore his gluteus muscle in the landing, Daphne the bomb aimer broke some ribs and damaged her lung, Shaggy will also won’t be flying again due to liver and kidney damage. After a long cold wet wait, the crew were picked up and taken back to Blighty!
