1944 Mission Notes:

Mission 7 - A quiet mission. No enemy aircraft encountered. Luftwaffe had consistent bad communications, and ground radar never located the bomber.

Mission 8 - Even with encountering an enemy fighter on target approach, it was a quiet mission. With the French coast approaching C-Charlie was wracked with shell hits as an enemy fighter attacked from below. The target for the mission was just in from the coast, which meant the bomber could not conduct evasive maneuvers if she hoped to hit her target. The enemy fire focused on the rear centre section of the aircraft. The mid upper gunner lost both his heat and his guns. Several hits sent shrapnel into Monica and H2S but causing no damage. P/O Powell icily ignored the enemy attack focusing instead on the mission at hand. Post mission analysis showed an estimated 97% on target. Pilot F/Lt Reid swung the Halifax around and began his descent below 10,000 feet. C-Charlie reached 9,000 feet halfway across the Channel. During the descent Monica chirped once, or twice, then went silent. The bomber and her crew went unmolested the rest of the flight.
