Last plane, D for Derby shot down during Vegesack mission Aug 1942. L-Lincoln shot down during Genoa, Italy mission (Mission 8 1943)

1943 Mission Notes:

Mission 9 - On her first combat mission, G-Griffin survived a tremendous battering, from enemy aircraft and Flak. Crossed paths with eighteen enemy aircraft, 6 of which attacked G-Griffin, administering 298 points of damage. Flak found G-Griffin 6 times, damaging the aircraft 6 times. Expect to be flying in about 5 days. Before succumbing to multiple injuries, Bomb Aimer P/O Willfrid Marshman dropped 20% of our bombs on target.

Mission 10 - All quiet until we reached the Netherlands, outbound. Hammered by a Schrage Musik attack, Do217J-1, that cause little structural damage, but knocked out the O2 for the W/T and Nav. Fighter did not return. A second fighter, Do217N-2 was spotted and shot down by the MUG, no credit awarded. Dropped below 10,000 feet. Despite being at low altitude for the remainder of the mission flak was unable to cause any damage. In target zone, W/T shot down Me110F-4. full credit awarded. Despite the target being completely obscured, bomb aimer was able to drop 50% on target. No more encounters with enemy aircraft for remainder of the mission.

Mission 11 - G-Griffin was pestered by bandits , gremlins, searchlights, and flak almost the whole trip. Ten enemy aircraft shadowed or attacked us in eight of the twelve zones flown. Searchlights caught us in five zones, and Flak found us in six zones. Only one enemy aircraft hit us, for minor damage. Our only casualty was from flak: Tail gunner Cpl Blythe was killed by flak shrapnel.. Gremlins nearly shorted our EW systems. The blighters did manage to take out our brakes, discovered upon landing. Despite the constant flak and searchlights, P/O Robertson did manage to drop 20% on target.

Mission 12 - Outbound over the North Sea, surprised by a Ju88C6, which took out our H2S Radar. Dropped 60% on target. Over Belgium, inbound, jumped by Me110F4 with a Schrage attack, which seriously wounded Sgt. Beckwith, breaking his leg, and causing a slight concussion for P/O Robertson. Subsequent Schrage attack caused a fire in the starboard wing outboard fuel tank, forcing the crew to bail out. One crew rescued, five captured, and one KIA.
