Mission AAR
Previous plane -- Woof, Woof -- shot down during mission 4.
1943 - Mission 5: Odd ball wasn’t feeling the positive waves. Everything was going well, encountered some light flak inbound. Woof Woof Woof was coned in zone 7 near a town called Kaiserslautern Germany. During this time Odd Ball was doing his best to shake the search lights. An unseen JU 88 C6 had tagged us and hit us from 6 o clock low. Even with the evasive action he got 8 hits, 4 of which hit our bombs, exploding them! The tail turret’s dead man’s handle hit trapping my tail gunner. The O2 was also knocked out in the tail. The Starboard wing was set alight. (Not good even if the bombs hadn’t detonated!) - a good run of missions culminating in the Germans synchronization of the Flack, Search lights and night fighters!
Mission 5 - I'm afraid tonight's been a bit of a non event. Couldn't see friend or for what with the shocking weather. Upon entering zone 6 we had a mission recall i'd only presume that weather Spits brought back bad news regarding the weather over the target. Wasn't relishing the landing with a load of eggs onboard!! All's well and we landed safe and sound! Better luck next time.
Mission 6 - Woof, Woof, Woof was coned and hit by flak and a Ju 88 C6 over the Dutch coast. Several passes, Sgt. Cowboy was seriously wounded in the hands. Both tail and mid Upper guns jammed. Numerous hits which knocked out the dingy, auto pilot, heat out in the tail Gnr's suit. Engines 2 & 3 feathered. Fuel leak with just enough to get us to Blighty. Dropped to low altitude, jettisoned the bombs and limped home. Kelly hit the attacking fighter FCAB Better luck next time! Flying Officer Odd Ball.
Mission 8 - Our luck has finally changed! Uneventful all the way to the target. Kelly my bombardier I'm told was aiming at a launderette used by the local Gestapo and we hit it with 98% of our bombs!!! No clean socks and pants for them!! We were bounced by a couple of 110's we sustained minor damage but Babra and Mulligan between them shot one of them down! With good old Odd Balls corkscrewing we lost the other! Landed in time for tea and stickies and a good kip!
Mission 9 - The crew were a bit jittery as it was the skippers Birthday. We were bounced by a couple of Ju88's minor damaged inflicted to us, Oxygen out in the tail with a small fire which was promptly put out! Lost the fighters and lined up on the target with light flack. 50% of our bombs hit the target! Caught by search lights but escaped unscathed. Gremlins paid a visit making our flaps U/S. Made a smooth landing and we were glad for the totty of rum from the lovely WAFFs! Chief has some work to do, but we will be good to go next time!
Mission 11 - Wood Woof Woof had an uneventful trip to the target. Kelly managed to drop 42% of our bombs on the target. As we were leaving Germany, their searchlights would have coned us but the good old corkscrew did us proud. Over the North Sea we had a run in with a ME110 F4. Mulligan spotted him at 6 low and damaged the wannabe Ace. He missed us and was never seen again. Un eventful for the rest of our trip and a good landing. Chiefy will be please that he only needs to top up the tanks and ammo for the next trip! Pilot - Odd Ball 103 Sqdn.
Mission 12 - I’m afraid this trip was a bit of poor show from old Woof Woof Woof, we settled into the normal run of things when just over the Dutch coast we were in thick cloud. We received the order for recall and turned around and headed back for an early nightcap and last orders at the local pub!! Better luck next time!
Mission 13 - Gardening: I must say Odd Ball and the chaps were looking forward to this one! Everything was going brilliantly no bother from Gerry and all lined up. The only Hostile Wind was the expletives coming from Kelly’s mouth when nothing happened when he pressed the tit! Odd ball calmly flew back round to come in again to give Kelly and the boys a chance to manually drop the eggs. Couldn’t get them to budge! Odd ball laughed at mission 13 being unlucky for us! We buzzed the chimney tops all the way back to base and landed safely for some cheese and wine!
Mission 15 - Emden: Woof Woof Woof was over the North Sea in thick cloud just having received the Mission Recall Order when we were jumped by a ME110 F4. This guy knew what he was doing as he’d hit every part of our plane. O2 out in the tail. Ammo racks hit in the rear section, Flight Engineer severely wounded in the abdomen. Pilot Odd ball light wounds to his arm. Nose turret glass smashed and the mid upper turret out of action. Fortunately for us we lost him in the cloud and dropped altitude and returned to base. Odd Ball did a cracking effort landing the plane and Captain Bricks our SW engineer carried out his duties as best he could all the way home. Recommended for a medal! We have a new Engineer - Flight Sgt. Moriarty joining us.
Mission 16 - Captain Odd Ball reporting. We had no contact with the enemy until their flak opened up on us over the Dutch coast. We sustained minor damage and managed to corkscrew and evade the enemies search lights. Still evading the enemies Flak and fighters we lined ourselves up with the target flares and managed 40% concentration. On our way back we were jumped by a rookie German fighter which caused minimal damage. Carrying out corkscrew maneuvers again we lost the fighter. All was good all the way home with a safe landing back at base for a quick debrief and bed!
Mission 17 - It was gonna be a beautiful mission with Woof Woof Woof having a leisurely start and being in the last third. I had a funny feeling we were being tracked by enemy fighters but didn’t see a thing. The Krauts opened up on us with their 88’s putting a few holes in the girl! Then we were bounced by a fighter, sounded like we were hit but no obvious damage. All this along with the cloud cover meant we were off target when we finally shook that fighter off of us. We did well to get 5% on target, I think the other 95% hit other targets of opportunity! On our way back our tail gunner nailed a JU88 C6 dropping them into the sea! An uneventful flight back and a good landing ready for some cheese and wine! Woof Woof Woof (that’s my other dog impression)
Respectfully, Odd Ball
Mission 19 - To be honest, this would be the deepest we’ve gone into Germany. Odd Balls positive waves had a fantastic flight. We seemed to dodge all the Flack and Fighters all the way to and from the target. The heating was temperamental on the return flight, so we dropped down to low altitude. We had a nice smooth landing back in time for tea and stickies!
Let’s hope more of our trips are like this!
Mission 20 - Woof Woof Woof had an uneventful trip to the target. Even with Odd Ball’s positive waves, even Kelly couldn’t hit a completely obscured target. Big Joe the navs assured us we were over Germany so we definitely scored a direct hit- on Germany that is! On our return we were bounced by x2 Bf 110 F4’s. They scored the first hits, damaging our dingy, rudder and putting some more ventilation in the old girl. Babra (Mid Upper) shot the tail off one that came in from 9 O’clock high (no chutes). Mulligan shot the left wing off the other. (No chutes). After all that excitement, we landed back in time for Tea and stickies!
