Squadron: 104  Aircraft Name: B for Bialystok

Crew:
Previous Aircraft  K- Karen lost on Brunswick mission. Karen II lost on Berlin mission. B for Bessie lost on Chambly mission.

Mission 4 - B For Bialystok was attacked by five enemy fighters and hit several times by flak. Made bombing run over target from Low altitude due to loss of oxygen from enemy gunfire. Hit target with 50%. On inbound leg, lost Engine 4 as we exited the Continent. Landed a bit rough with missing tail wheel and no brakes on starboard landing gear.
Mission 5 - We were swarmed by German night fighters most of the way to and from target. Our bomber took considerable damage and Sgt. Kosartka, our tail gunner was killed. Our bombs were considered off target because we dropped them through our inoperable bomb bay doors ( damaged by enemy gunfire), even though our navigator assured me we were over the target city. We were hit several times by flak and attacked by a total, we believe, of 14 enemy night fighters. While they could more easily see us in the bright moonlight, so too, did we see many of them. Accurate defensive gunfire from tail, mid upper and nose machine guns shot down a number of attacking E/A and damaged a few more. On inbound flight, over Belgium, we lost our two port engines to enemy gunfire, so the flight to base took longer than we liked. But we made it and landed safely. I am told it will take at least a week to repair our bomber.
Mission 6 - As B for Bialystok leveled off in zone 2, we were shot at by a single Ju88 C6 that came at us from 3 level. The German was spotted, I like to think my jinxing made his bullets miss us. No other German fighter attacked us this mission, nor were we hit by flak. We were spotlighted near the seacoast on inbound flight, but no German fighters appeared nor were we hit by flak. Landed safely.
Mission 7 - B-Bialystok was heavily damage by enemy fighters and flak. Did not make it to target for bomb run; bombs dropped through bomb bay doors to the north of Paris. Pilot severely wounded, other crewmen attempted to pilot bomber back to Britain. Two engines out (2-3), no power to gun turrets, no communications.... Bomber made it back to Kent where three crewmen bailed out. Sgt. Chrominwisz (Nav.) attempted to land in a field. The bomber crashed and those aboard were killed.
