Mission Reports -
Mission 3 - After the mission briefing, we headed to the plane and did our pre-flight check. With the plane looking proper, we headed out for our placement in take-off line. After takeoff all went well with forming up for the flight out. We were in the middle group and we kept a keen eye out for the first flight so as not to collide. The trip over the channel was uneventful and we kept to our stations for the trip. After we reached Belgium territory, we started to get ready for German night fighters. FSGT Grey readied the Window bundles to be dropped and LT Hughes prepared to switched to H2S radar for bombing. We knew this would bring more detection to use, but we would go in and get out as quick as possible. Searchlights started but with the thicker clouds they could not track us. We did not see any German fighters but we knew they wee looking for us. We reached the target and saw the lead bombs hitting the ground and we lined up on that and we were able get a 50% hit.
Turning to head home we expected to get tracked and jumped by fighters. But the weather helped to continue to make it hard for the searchlights and no fighters attacked. We were soon back to the Belgium border and safety of liberated Europe. We landed back in Norwich without incident.
Mission 4 - The outbound leg was uneventful with no interference from the Luftwaffe batteries or aircraft. Over the target it was discovered that the bomb release toggle was not working and SGT Worth had to go to the bomb bay and release by hand. He was successful but our bomb dropped wide of the target. The inbound leg of the flight was uneventful until we were over the Channel and #2 engine flamed out. The engine extinguishers put it out and we were able to make it back with out any other issue. One day repair will be needed.
Mission 5 - Plane shot down by fuel tank fire by HE 219 A-O after bombing run. Plan went down over target. Crew status 1 KIA, 5 BO/POW. New plane and crew to follow for the next mission.
