Mission 10 - BRIGHTON BEACH FLING took off and joined bomber stream without problems. We had just reached high altitude when we were attacked. Jerry came at us, unspotted, from our “six” and raked us something fierce, then disappeared into the night. The worse of it was PO Chartwell was severely wounded and unable to continue. Sgt. Lee, our engineer, was also badly wounded. I asked Sgt. Gustoffsen to drop our bombs, then managed to turn our aircraft around, descend, and head back to base. I’ve heard the landing procedure said aloud many times during our training, and, with help from a real pilot over the wireless, managed to find the base and land our aircraft without killing us all.
PO Chartwell and Sgt. Lee were taken to medical services.
Mission 11 - Encountered electrical problems; intercom failure, Monica failure, suit heater failure. Intercom failure led to being OFF Target with our bombs. Only encountered one E/A; a Ju88 that made several passes at us, the worse of it being a hit to the rudder and hit to the "Dead man's handle" of the tail turret, rendering our tail guns inoperable and trapping Sgt. Meadows in the tail turret until aircraft maintenance personnel could extract him.
Mission 12 - BRIGHTON BEACH FLING was shot down in zone 2 inbound by a DO217. Enemy gunfire set the port outboard fuel tank ablaze. Crew did bail out, but none were found by RN patrols.
