Steven K. Dixon 2023
Squadron: 104 Aircraft Name: Q for Quebec II
Crew:
Previous Aircraft K- Karen lost on Brunswick mission. Karen II lost on Berlin mission. B for Bessie lost on Chambly mission. B for Bialystok lost on Noisy-Le-Sec mission. Q for Quebec lost on Cambrai mission.
Mission 14 - In zone 2 outbound, we were recalled. As we turned to return to base, we were jumped by what we think was a Ju88G7. Jerry put a number of hits on us, including hit to starboard outboard wing fuel tank. It was leaking pretty badly, and our engineer, Sgt. Thompson, said that his calculations told him we could get to target, then have to land due to fuel loss. Continued on to base, landed safely with our bomb load. Q for QUEBEC should be repaired and patched up for next mission.
Mission 15 - In zone 3 outbound, attacked several times by what we think was an Me110G4 - Jerry first came up at us and using "schrage musik," hit us fairly hard; knocking out engine 3 and rendering tail guns inoperable. Sgt. Calvert, tail gunner, wounded. The '110 Jerry came back again, unseen from six low, and hit starboard wing root and turning our dinghy into auto shop wipes. That Jerry came around again, but our frantic jinxing made him miss his third shot at us. With serious damages to Q for QUEBEC II, I made decision to dump bombs and return to base. Landed safely. Sgt. Calvert taken to medical for wound care and evaluation. Maintenance said both ammo tracks for tail guns damaged and inoperable. Q for QUEBEC will be patched up, repairs made, replacement equipment installed and should be ready for next mission.
Mission 17 - Took serious damages from night fighter attacks. Port wing shot up ( Engine 2 out, ailerons and flaps inoperable, Sgt. McLaughlin, our bomb aimer KIA. Ammo track feeding tail guns inoperable, rendering tail guns inoperable.
Mission 18 - Just after reaching the Channel, Q for QUEBEC II was attacked by two Luftwaffe Nightfighters. Q for QUEBEC was raked from stern to bow by an attacking Do217 N-2, and one shell into the bomb bay set off the bombs.
