Crew:
Previous Aircraft K- Karen lost on Brunswick mission. Karen II lost on Berlin mission. B for Bessie lost on Chambly mission. B for Bialystok lost on Noisy-Le-Sec mission. Q for Quebec lost on Cambrai mission. Q for Quebec II lost on Dreux mission.
Mission 19 - In zone 4 outbound, attacked by an aggressive HE219 A-O who did some serious damages to HAUNT THE MOORS. We ended the encounter with a serious fuel leak and inoperable bomb bay door. According to our Engineer, WO Hoskins, at the rate fuel was leaking we could just make it back to base. Which is what we did. Landed safely with our load of explosives.
Mission 20 - Take off was on time and smooth in good weather. HAUNT THE MOORS headed out following assigned course. Reached high altitude as we reached the sea. Encounters with E/A over the channel. Two enemy night fighters made firing passes at us, neither doing any serious damages. Sgt. Everly believes he hit one of the attacking night fighters. On approach to target, easily seen by the flames, we were hit by flak, which apparently damaged port rudder. One N/F made firing pass at us; apparently shredded our dinghy. Again, believed to have been hit by Sgt. Everly’s tail guns. Believe hit target with almost all of our payload ! Sgt. Teague was pretty excited about his drop (estimated 95% on target! ) Flight home saw us attacked several times by a variety of N/F, the worse being the last one over the channel who did damages to nose guns, port wing root, holed oil tank of engine 1, and creased Sgt.Teague’s head with a bullet . Crew believe we did hit at least two attacking N/F’s with our defensive gunfire. Hit by flak again, this time as we approached the channel coast. Landed safely. Sgt. Teague taken to medical to get his head checked out. Sgt. Harrison, maintenance chief, said HAUNT THE MOORS should be soon ready for next mission.
Campaign 4
Mission 1 - Hit by flak ~ no serious damages. Encountered one E/A, believed to have been a Do217 J1. Mid Upper Gunner spotted 'em. We did not hit Jerry, Jerry did not hit us. Jerry disappeared after missing his shot. ON TARGET, estimated 40% on target.
Mission 2 - Flew there, bombed it, flew back to base.
Mission 3 - Take off was on time and smooth in good weather. Tonight finds us in a scattered cloud sky, except when we hit the continental coast over Belgium. HAUNT THE MOORS headed out following assigned course. Reached high altitude as we reached the sea. There was flak as we crossed the German border; they were alerted by the first stream and we were hit. Both wings were hit and there was a hole in the fuselage. We had no encounters with E/A. Sgt. Sinclair (navigator) announced that we were on approach to Bingen and fires caused by the first wave were very evident. Sgt. Teague (bomb aimer) came on and counted down to bomb release. And, nothing! There was no release! Teague swore and announced there was a problem with the bloody bomb release mechanism. I made decision to try again, and turned HAUNT THE MOORS around for another go around. “Listen up Lads, keep a sharp watch for other bombers and the bloody Luftwaffe!” I said over the intercom. Again, we came over Bingen, now alight from more fires than we could see several minutes ago. No flak this time around either, Teague counting down and….. Nothing ! Bloody Nothing ! I told Teague to do whatever he needed to do to get rid of our bombs. A short time later, HAUNT THE MOORS lurched upward as our bombs were finally released. “I hope you didn’t bloody bomb our lads in Belgium!” I commented over the intercom. “Nay Skipper,” replied Sinclair, “as far as I can tell, we’re still over Germany, I think I saw the Mosel River below us.” There were no contacts with E/A or other problems on flight back to base. HAUNT THE MOORS landed safely. Sgt. Harrison, maintenance chief, said HAUNT THE MOORS should be soon ready for next mission.
Mission 4 - Flew to target without problems. On course, hit target area, turned for home. Hit by AA, two superficial hits. No enemy night fighters encountered. Zone 7, inbound, hit by flak; starboard aileron rendered inoperable. Landed safely.
Mission 5 - Flew to target with no problems. Was hit by German searchlights on approach and over target, but no hits from flak or encounters with night fighters. Believed to hit target with 14% of bombs. On exiting target zone, again hit by spot light; this time, flak found us and rendered the starboard elevator inoperable. Flew back to base, landed safely.
Mission 6 - Took off with no problems. Flew to target without encountering any Night Fighters. Was briefly hit by spotlight over Holland, but no flak came anywhere near us. Easy enough to spot Munster from the fires created by the chaps from 102 Squadron who preceded us. Dropped our bombs and headed back to East Anglia. No encounters with Night Fighters on return flight. While photos indicate we dropped our bombs on the intended city, we only got 30% on target credit. HAUNT THE MOORS will be inspected and whatever maintenance completed and be ready for next mission.
Mission 7 - Was hit by flak over target; no serious damages. 30% On Target. Attacked by two night fighters; no casualties, some damages to HAUNT THE MOORS. Worst damage was hole in outboard fuel tank requiring an emergency landing at Brussels, Belgium for repairs
Mission 8 - Two night fighters encountered. Both made one pass at us, both hitting us but doing no serious damages. Hit by spotlights on both flights over Dutch coast. Target well lit up from work of previous bombers. We were on target, estimated 92% ! Lost engine 1 over water inbound, but still made base safely.
Mission 9 - Bombed Target. Damaged by attacking Ju88G7, which holed fuel tanks. Crew bailed out over Holland. Most became POW's. One rescued by Dutch Resistance and returned to England.
