Campaign 4

Mission 10 - There was a fair bit of flak; PASTIES FOR FRITZ hit twice, no serious damages. As we prepared to drop bombs, Sgt. Andrews reported that nothing happened when he initiate the bomb release mechanism. We came around again, using fires caused by other bombers hitting target city. Again, Sgt. Andrews could not get bomb release mechanism to release bombs ! I took us a bit south of the city, then back to the city. Finally, the bloody bombs released. Uneventful flight back to base. There was quite a bit of flak near Amsterdam, but we were not hit. Landed safely.

Mission 11 - Flew to target without encounter with E/A or flak hits. Was caught in search light shortly after crossing into Germany, but the flak was light. Target well lit by action of previous bombers. 50% on target. On inbound, hit by flak as we neared Germany/Belgium border - superficial hits. Landed safely.

Mission 12 - Shortly after flying into Dutch airspace, were hit by flak, which damaged starboard ammo track for tail guns. (why are we being ordered to fly near large cities occupied by Jerry with his flak guns and airfields? ) Then we were attacked by what we think was a DO 217 N-2, diving at us from 6 high. Jerry was spotted by Sgt. Levies, who fired at the DO217 with his port tail guns. Jerry hit us, damaging the port ammo track, rendering tail guns inoperable. Also hit was the DR compass, which briefly threw off Sgt. O'Lunin's navigation. After his pass at us, the DO217 disappeared. No other encounters with E/A. Sgt. O'Lunin got us back on track for target, which as we approached, we could see burning areas from work of previous bombers. We were granted 30% on target. There was some moderate flak over target city, but we were not hit. No encounters on inbound flight. I would like to note here that rations for night flights should not be slices of bread with that Yank peanut butter spread and jam. It is too messy to eat while trying to fly one of his majesty's large bombers. Landed safely at base.
